Chapter fourteen
Jenson
âYou need to be more careful,â I scold Angel as I close his office door.
âMe? Iâm not the one falling all over some pretty young new-hire. This better not be one of your drunken escapades. Iâve said it before and Iâll say it againâsober that shit up, Jenson. First Marla, now this? Itâs getting in the way, and you know it.â
âThatâs not the point. You called her my girlfriend while she was in your office, which let her know that you figured out she and I are seeing each other. I know how you knew, but how the hell did you explain it to her?â
Lycan law mandated all Lycans were born, not made. While it was possible to create werewolves by biting humans, it was strictly forbidden. Angel was creata lupus, a made wolf. Wolves who are made donât smell Lycan the way wolves who are born do, so Gia wouldnât have any way to know . . . unless he stupidly allowed her to figure it out.
âEasy. The clothes she was wearing looked too much like they came from those fancy stores your mother shops at. Plus, I saw your shopper dragging stuff through the lobby yesterday. I told her I saw the clothes she was wearing on a rack in the elevator yesterday and the shopper told me they were for your new lady friend. Gia confirmed the rest by her reaction.â
âFuck, youâre a good liar.â
âIt wasnât completely a lie. I saw Lonnie and even helped him get everything on the elevator. But damn, she had your smell all over her so strongly Iâd have thought you were right there with us.â
âShe canât know about you. Itâs too riskyâfor both of us. I donât know Gia well enough yet to predict her reaction to learning thereâs a creata lupus among us.â
Angel cocks his head, giving me a scathing look as he leans over the desk toward me.
âSo is this where Iâm supposed to say âgee Jenson, thanks for not killing me like your clan bylaws wanted you toâ or something?â
Iâm unable to stop the laugh that bursts out of me at his sarcasm. âFuck you, Angelo. Youâre a pain in the ass, you know that?â
Good people donât deserve death just because of some idiotic rules. Pain in the ass or not, Angelâs a good person, and heâs talented as fuck.
His face softens. âIâm well aware of the risk. Look, you defied your father for me. Iâll never be able to repay you for what you did.â
âI did more than defy him, and we both know it. Still, it was necessary. I couldnât allow him to continue to lead the pack with his hateful rhetoric and increasing insanity. He had to be dealt with. You were just the final straw that tipped my hand and forced the altercation.â
Father found out about Angel and assigned me to kill him. After meeting Angel, I refused. It pushed Father into a rampage, and he decided by refusing, I was forfeiting my life, and that Angel and I both should die.
